Our Mission: South Sound Dance Access fosters a healthy and resilient community in the South Puget Sound through ensuring access to dance, movement, and the performing arts for people of all ages, as a means of mental and physical health, creative expression, and community building.
Our Vision and Belief:
We envision a world where people of all ages have access to the performing arts, dance, and movement regardless of socioeconomic class, race, gender, sexuality, or any other form of social positioning. We believe that dance and the arts can be life saving work that is vital for mental and physical health, and this belief is backed by emerging science regarding the body-mind connection, social emotional learning, and the nervous system.
What We Do:
We live out our mission through three main avenues:
South Sound Dance Access was founded in the fall of 2022.
We grew out of, and work in partnership with, South Sound Dance studio in Tumwater, WA. In the summer of 2022, Hannah Taylor, CEO and founder of South Sound Dance, and Alice Grendon, Executive Director of South Sound Dance Access, began dreaming up ways to give back to the community in the South Puget Sound region and spread the power of the performing arts – South Sound Dance Access was born!
Our mission, goals, and strategy are stewarded by our Board of Directors and the functions of the organization are carried out by our Executive Director, Alice Grendon.
A note from Alice: I have worked in both the dance industry and the non-profit world for many years, and I am thrilled to get the opportunity to combine these skill sets in service of sharing the power of dance more widely within our community! I had the great privilege of growing up dancing under the tutelage of world-renowned dance pedagogue Anne Green Gilbert, creator of BCDE and The Brain Dance. I attribute this holistic mind-body education and creative outlet to fostering personal resilience in my own life and providing so many kids with the tools needed to navigate many of life's challenges and to counteract Adverse Childhood Experience (ACE's). It means the world to me to be able to give back to my community the powerful and lifesaving tools that have been given to me. I truly believe that mind-body education creates healthier kids and a healthier society.

Jerie Longacre is a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor who graduated from Western Washington University. She lived and worked in Olympia for 30 years, and raised her two sons in Olympia. The town was a very important part of their lives. Jerie’s sons still have friends they met when they were cub scouters in Olympia. And although Jerie lives in Tacoma now, she is still very connected to Thurston County. An important part of Jerie’s life is her membership in Epsilon Sigma Alpha (ESA), an organization started in the 1920’s meant to educate women. In 1972 Danny Thomas, a well-known comedian at the time, asked ESA to start a national campaign to raise funds for St. Jude Children’s Hospital. Since the ’70’s ESA has raised millions for the hospital. Fundraisers include garage sales, “broom stick pool” contests, golf tournaments, doll teas, blackberry pie and cookie sales and many more creative and effective fundraising efforts. Jerie enjoys helping in these functions and wants to apply her skills to support South Sound Dance Access. Jerie is an avid supporter of the arts and has been a season ticket holder of the Fifth Avenue Theater for over 20 years. She loves music, musicals, and dance. Jerie enjoyed watching Aja, our original SSDA president, grow up dancing - becoming more and more the expert and teaching others. Jerie wants to be a part of this great mission of SSDA to share the power of dance broadly throughout the community of the South Puget Sound.
Tracey Schmaltz graduated from the University of Washington in 1995 and has worked as a pharmacist for 28 years. Throughout that time she has raised three children that all progressed and graduated through the Olympia School District. It has been her passion to help in the schools that were educating her children through PTO, fundraising, activity planning and classroom involvement to support the teachers. She also stays involved in the community by providing various services to the St Michael Parish Men’s Shelter.
She danced recreationally from her childhood through college, participating in the WSU Orchesis Dance company. However, her greatest connection to dance has been through her daughter who grew up in the dance studio and is now pursuing a BFA in Modern Dance from the University of Utah. She has a great appreciation for how dance has impacted the physical and psychological development of her daughter.
SSDA is an opportunity to stay involved in the community of dance and educators and it is an exciting new adventure.
